Mockingbirds chirp in the dim October light
deliberating plans making travel arrangements
till they come to a full stop.
A car whizzes by.
Refrigerator hums in the next room where husband sips
miso and clears his throat. The birds continue
working out the details and a dog barks.
She has given herself permission to play hooky today–
(September was ghosts and aches and missing)
But October is here,
and real silk pillowcases
fulfill their promise of profoundest comfort–
Another dog barks and there is a click.
It is safe to get up now,
It is the best answer:
Not leave the students waiting.
